15 Dominio e imagen

Definición IV.1 (Función).

Una función (de variable real) es una regla cualquiera que hace corresponder un número real y solamente uno a cada número de un cierto conjunto A⊂ℝA\subset\mathbb{R}:

f:A\displaystyle f\colon A
⟶ℝ\displaystyle{}\longrightarrow\mathbb{R}
x\displaystyle x
⟼f(x)\displaystyle{}\longmapsto f(x)
Definición IV.2.

Al conjunto AA le llamaremos dominio de ff, denotado por A=DomfA=Domf, y es el conjunto para los que f(x)f(x) tiene sentido. También, llamaremos imagen de ff, denotado por ImfImf, al conjunto de números reales yy para los que existe x∈Domfx\in Domf tal que

y=f(x)y=f(x)
Ejemplo IV.1.
xxyyf(x)=x2f(x)=x^{2}Dom(f)=ℝ\text{Dom}(f)=\mathbb{R}Im(f)=[0,+∞)\text{Im}(f)=[0,+\infty)
xxyyg(x)=x3g(x)=x^{3}Dom(g)=ℝ\text{Dom}(g)=\mathbb{R}Im(g)=ℝ\text{Im}(g)=\mathbb{R}
Ejemplo IV.2.

h(x)=11−x2h(x)=\frac{1}{\sqrt{1-x^{2}}}

Dado x∈Domhx\in Domh, se tiene que 1−x2≥0,1−x2≠0⇒1−x2>01-x^{2}\geq 0,\sqrt{1-x^{2}}\neq 0\Rightarrow 1-x^{2}>0. Por tanto, Domh={x∈ℝ∣1−x2>0}Domh=\left\{x\in\mathbb{R}\mid 1-x^{2}>0\right\}

Resolviendo la ecuación, obtenemos como raíces x=±1x=\pm 1. Dividiendo por tramos:

−1-111−-++−-

Por lo tanto, Domh=(−1,1)Domh=(-1,1) ya que es el tramo que cumple que 1−x2>01-x^{2}>0.

Para calcular la imagen de hh, sabemos que y∈Imhy\in Imh si ∃x∈(−1,1)∣h(x)=y\exists x\in(-1,1)\mid h(x)=y.

  •

    Para y≤0y\leq 0: ∃x∈(−1,1)∣h(x)=y⇔0<11−x2=y≤0\exists x\in(-1,1)\mid h(x)=y\iff 0<\frac{1}{\sqrt{1-x^{2}}}=y\leq 0. No es posible.

  •

    Para y>0y>0: si y∈Imh,∃x∈(−1,1)y\in Imh,\exists x\in(-1,1) tal que h(x)=y⇒11−x2=y⇒1=y(1−x2)⇒1=y2⋅(1−x2)⇒1y2=1−x2⇒x2=1−1y2⇒x=±1−1y2h(x)=y\Rightarrow\frac{1}{\sqrt{1-x^{2}}}=y\Rightarrow 1=y(\sqrt{1-x^{2}})% \Rightarrow 1=y^{2}\cdot(1-x^{2})\Rightarrow\frac{1}{y^{2}}=1-x^{2}\Rightarrow x% ^{2}=1-\frac{1}{y^{2}}\Rightarrow x=\pm\sqrt{1-\frac{1}{y^{2}}}.

    Supongamos y∈Imh⇒x∈(−1,1)∣h(x)=y⇒11−x2=y⇒x=±1−1y2∈ℝ?1−1y2≥0⇔1≥1y2⇔y2≥1y\in Imh\Rightarrow x\in(-1,1)\mid h(x)=y\Rightarrow\frac{1}{\sqrt{1-x^{2}}}=y% \Rightarrow x=\pm\sqrt{1-\frac{1}{y^{2}}}{\color[rgb]{1,0,0}\definecolor[named% ]{pgfstrokecolor}{rgb}{1,0,0}\in\mathbb{R}?}\;1-\frac{1}{y^{2}}\geq 0\iff 1% \geq\frac{1}{y^{2}}\iff y^{2}\geq 1. Luego Imh=[1,∞)Imh=[1,\infty).

    Cómo comprobamos si y∈Imhy\in Imh?

    h(1−1y2)=11−(1−1y2)2=11−1+1y2=11y2=y2=|y|=yh(\sqrt{1-\frac{1}{y^{2}}})=\frac{1}{\sqrt{1-(\sqrt{1-\frac{1}{y^{2}}})^{2}}}=% \frac{1}{\sqrt{1-1+\frac{1}{y^{2}}}}=\frac{1}{\sqrt{\frac{1}{y^{2}}}}=\sqrt{y^% {2}}=|y|=y.

    Además, 1−1y2∈(0,1)\sqrt{1-\frac{1}{y^{2}}}\in(0,1).

    • •

      1−1y2≥0\sqrt{1-\frac{1}{y^{2}}}\geq 0.

    • •

      1−1y2<1\sqrt{1-\frac{1}{y^{2}}}<1. 0<1y2⇒1<1y2+1⇒1−1y2<1y2+1−1y2⇒1−1y2<1⇒1−1y2<1=10<\frac{1}{y^{2}}\Rightarrow 1<\frac{1}{y^{2}}+1\Rightarrow 1-\frac{1}{y^{2}}<% \frac{1}{y^{2}}+1-\frac{1}{y^{2}}\Rightarrow 1-\frac{1}{y^{2}}<1\Rightarrow% \sqrt{1-\frac{1}{y^{2}}}<\sqrt{1}=1
